On Saturday, Nov. 22 from 1:00-3:00 pm John W. Scott, author of Natalie Scott: A Magnificent Life (Pelican, 2008) will be autographing his new book at the Maple Street Book Shop, 7523 Maple Street, in New Orleans. The event is free and open to the public.

WHAT
In his book, Natalie Scott: A Magnificent Life (Pelican Publishing, 2008), author John W. Scott vividly documents the remarkable legacy of one of New Orleans’ most colorful and vital personalities.

Once described by author Sherwood Anderson as “the best newspaperwoman in America”, Natalie Vivian Scott (1890-1957) was widely recognized as a literary and cultural dynamo of the early twentieth century, and a celebrated writer in Mexico and the United States.
As a war zone Red Cross nurse and translator during World Wars I and II, Scott became the only American woman in WWI to be awarded the Croix de Guerre, France's medal for combat bravery.  Scott was also a vital figure in the talented circle of French Quarter writers who gathered there after WWI.  A journalist, playwright, actress and newspaper columnist, Scott was co-founder of Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre, creator of a boarding house for artists in a rundown mansion on Pirate’s Alley, owner of the Court of Two Sisters, and an integral force within the publishing of the colorful Double Dealer magazine.  Her close companions in New Orleans in the 1920s included an array of soon-to-be-famous authors, actors, and painters, including Anderson, William Faulkner, and Lyle Saxon, among numerous others.

Natalie Scott: A Magnificent Life is permeated by Scott’s letters, photos and original narratives – many found in Tulane University’s extensive archives.  It is an incredible account of the passions, causes, and adventures of an unforgettable woman.

WHO
John W. Scott received his Ph.D. in history from Louisiana State University and later became an assistant professor of history there. He has won the Louisiana Historical Association Presidential Memorial Award and the Martin Hardwick Award for Writing. He became interested in this subject while a student at Tulane University. The university’s extensive archives, files, and artifacts became the catapult for his interest in accurately and thoroughly documenting the robust life of Natalie Scott. Also an attorney, he received a J.D. from LSU and served several terms in the State Legislature.

NOLA Unchained

Join Stay Local! on Saturday, November 22 and help inject $1.8 million* into New Orleans through shopping & dining only locally-owned!  Thousands of other conscientious shoppers across the country will be unchaining themselves right along with you.

Your choice of where to spend your money has an impact on New Orleans' public services, its schools, its character, and its eco-friendliness.

Studies demonstrate that dollars spent at locally-owned independent businesses generate three times more economic activity in our community than dollars spent at chains.  Gambit Weekly has jumped on the Local First train and is urging readers to stay local with their holiday spending, too, with a special promotion for those who pledge to shop local.

BUSINESS OWNERS:  Use November 22 to show how local businesses give back to their community in diverse, creative ways.  Donate a percentage of the day's sales to your favorite charity, or give a discount to shoppers as a way to thank them for staying local this holiday season. Check out the exciting community events  La Divina Gelateria and Mat & Naddie's have already planned for November 22.

N.O. Surf Shop is taking it one step further: between now and the end of the year, mention the "Stay Local! discount" before you make your purchase and get 5% off all regularly priced items.

Let us know what you plan to do on November 22, and we'll spread the word.  Email Katie Jacobowski at kjacobow@tulane.edu or call 504-232-7821.

The InterContinental New Orleans with the New Orleans Hispanic Heritage Foundation (NOHHF) will host the 18th annual Azúcar Ball fundraiser. This year's theme is "Noche de Magia - Magical Night."

The proceeds from the Azúcar Ball will provide funds for the Foundation's scholarship program - awarding outstanding Hispanic students with scholarships to attend some of New Orleans' most prominent high schools. Last year the Foundation awarded 24 scholarships to local students.

The black tie event will take place in the InterContinental's LaSalle Ballroom from 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. The event will feature non-stop music by Julio y Cesar and Rumba Buena, as well as a silent auction and authentic Latin cuisine.

According to Martin Driskell, General Manager of InterContinental New Orleans, the InterContinental is proud to work in collaboration with the NOHHF to host the Azúcar Ball, a true celebration of Latin heritage for the entire New Orleans community.

"We are pleased to host this wonderful event focused on providing and enriching educational opportunities for local students, and we are thankful to Mr. José Suquet, CEO of Pan-American Life, for his help in bringing the Azúcar Ball to the InterContinental for the third consecutive year," said Driskell.

.
Recipe of the Week

Shrimp stuffed mirliton

No need to wait until Thanksgiving to make these Shrimp Stuffed Mirliton. A&K has mirliton at market right now. In this recipe the squash are individually stuffed with shrimp, ham, seasoning and breadcrumbs, but the dish can alternately be prepared casserole-style. Ask around the market. Everyone has their own tips for cooking this classic Louisiana holiday side dish. Shrimper Clara Gerica makes hers extra buttery by mixing in crumbled Ritz crackers rather than breadcrumbs. Have other tips to share? Be sure to stop be the Welcome Tent and let us know.

Ingredients
*
3 mirlitons, halved along the visible vertical line
* 2 tablespoons butter
* 1/2 cup chopped celery
* 1/2 cup chopped onion
* 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
* 1 cup coarsely chopped ham
* 1 cup small (50–60 count) shrimp, peeled and deveined
* 2 bay leaves
* 1-1/2 cups cubed stale French bread, soaked in water and drained (see Note)
* 1-1/2 cups chicken stock
* 1/2 cup Italian-style bread crumbs
* 1/4 cup chopped green onions
* 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
* 4 teaspoons Crystal hot sauce or other Louisiana hot sauce
* 2 teaspoons coarsely ground black pepper
* 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
* 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
* 1/2 teaspoon salt

Directions

Boil mirliton halves in salted water for 20 to 25 minutes or until tender. Drain and scoop out the meat, reserving both the meat and the shell and discarding the seeds. Chop mirliton meat. Set aside along with mirliton shells.

Melt butter in a medium sauté pan; add celery, onion, and bell pepper; sauté until translucent. Add ham, shrimp, and bay leaves; sauté until shrimp turn pink. Add bread and chicken stock and cook over medium-high heat for 5 to 6 minutes. Add reserved mirliton meat, bread crumbs, green onions, parsley, hot sauce, black pepper, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, and salt; stir to mix thoroughly. Cook for 5 minutes, then remove from heat to cool.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spoon stuffing mixture into reserved mirliton shells. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.

Note: For best results in any stuffing with French bread, the bread should not be soggy. So, after soaking the bread, place bread in a colander in the sink and press out any remaining water with your hands.
Serves 6

Celebration In The Oaks
The preview party for the children is November 23 from 5 to 8 p.m.

The celebration starts November 28- December 30.

Nightly Entertainment. See our full Calendar of Events for information on all coming events.

T-Rex is back. And so are the popular raptors. The Dinobration exhibit, a crowd favorite since 2003, is returning for the 2008 Celebration in the Oaks, City Park's annual magical holiday festival.

Also new are a dancing light show and a snow machine that will keep Mr. Bingle chilled with hourly snow showers. Of course, the fabled Carousel will be operational, complete with new lighting and music, and the train will take patrons on an enchanted journey highlighted by
an electrifying light display along City Park Avenue. New favorites will be the Coney Tower ride and a new Ferris Wheel. A rich tradition is New Orleans' signature, and nowhere is that tradition more evident than during the Christmas season at Celebration in the Oaks?. Join us
as we continue to rebuild our great city and share in the joy and spirit of our 24th annual Celebration.

Regretfully, the two-mile driving tour has been indefinitely postponed.

The Children's Preview Party

Sunday, November 23
5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Tickets are $25 per person, attendance limited.

An all-inclusive party just for pint-sized "patrons" and their parents featuring:
All the food kids can never get enough of including: hamburgers, hot dogs, mac & cheese, caesar salad, fruit, ice cream, cake, and PB & J sandwiches!

AMUSEMENT RIDES including: The new Coney Tower drop ride, a new Ferris Wheel (scheduled to be open), and old favorites such as the Live Oak Ladybug roller coaster, Tilt-a-Whirl, Scrambler, Red Baron mini-planes, the Construction Zone, the Rock n' Tug, Bumper Cars, Fun Slide and of course, the Antique Carousel and the Miniature Train decorated for the season.

UNIQUE ENTERTAINMENT featuring: Creole String Beans, Checker Doodle Balloons, face painting, and more!

The Children's Preview Party is a terrific opportunity for kids to enjoy their very own "holiday tradition" before the nightly crowds start and feel like little kings and queens at the same time. And, just think... moms and dads don't have to do a thing this one holiday evening, but enjoy the family experience.

NOBEL PRIZE WINNING CHEMIST SIR HAROLD KROTO TO SPEAK AT TULANE

Sir Harold Kroto, co-winner of the 1996 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, will speak at Tulane University on “Science, Society and Sustainability.” The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be held in 102 Jones Hall on Monday, Nov. 24 at 4 p.m.

Kroto is the Francis Eppes Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Florida State University.  Much of Kroto’s illustrious career was spent at the University of Sussex, where he holds an emeritus professorship. It was at Sussex in the 1970s that Kroto launched his early research on carbon stars and carbon chains in interstellar space.

In the 1980s, collaborating with Richard Smalley and Robert Curl at Rice University in Texas, who were using laser spectroscopy in their own research, Kroto was able to simulate the carbon chemistry that occurs in the atmosphere of a carbon star. The experiment not only proved that carbon stars could produce chains, but also led to the discovery of the C60 molecule – a soccer ball-shaped molecule made of 60 carbon atoms.

This discovery was pivotal -- for centuries people had believed that the element carbon only existed in two forms, as soft black graphite and the hard diamond. The existence of this new form of carbon with its unique structure (the C60 molecule is also known as “buckminsterfullerene,” named after Richard Buckminster Fuller, an architect known for the design of geodesic domes) has inspired intensive research in the field of nanotechnology. Scientists speculate about the possible uses of these incredibly strong, yet low-density molecules in electronics, medicine, and defense. Curl, Kroto and Smalley were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1996.

Kroto, a Fellow of the Royal Society and a member of the Board of Scientific Governors at The Scripps Research Institute, is an ardent advocate for science education who devotes much of his time and energy to promoting careers in science among young people. In 1995 he jointly set up the Vega Science Trust to create high quality science films including lectures, interviews with Nobel Laureates, discussion programs, careers and teaching resources for TV and Internet Broadcast. Visit http://www.vega.org.uk/ for more information.

Kroto’s visit to Tulane is sponsored by the Chemistry Department and the School of Science and Engineering.
