The New Orleans 100

"We have a real opportunity to make a difference here.

You could read about this in history books someday or you could take a role to help create it.

I can't imagine being anywhere else right now."
- Lauren Baum, The Idea Village

"The New Orleans 100" is a worldwide initiative that will highlight and encourage discussion among millions about 100 of the most innovative and world-changing ideas to take root in the city since Katrina.

After hearing so many of the positive changes and innovative projects post-Katrina, we've decided enough is enough. It's time to put an end to the negative press in mainstream media. We know that the levees broke. We know that our city is dysfunctional. We know that. But do you know about Prospect.1? Or about the influx of young professionals into New Orleans? The world needs to know about the NEW New Orleans. And to quote Brad Pitt, "If you're going to rebuild something, why not rebuild it right?" Amen brother.

To combat top down media during the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, we will leverage bottom up tools on the social web (email, blogs, twitter, facebook, digg, etc.), which can reach a combined audience of millions to raise awareness about New Orleans and inspire action to make a difference.

The list will be released on Monday, August 25th - the week of the Hurricane Katrina anniversary. Our goal is to reach 1,000,000 pageviews by 8/29/08. We encourage everyone to spread the word by emailing the list, blogging it, digging it, stumbling it, and yelling it out their windows.

You can make a difference. All it takes is a click!

Decadence Festival - Aug. 27th to Sept. 1st 2008

The year 2008 will be the 37th Southern Decadence celebration, but this will be only the 35th year with a Grand Marshal, since Grand Marshal selection did not begin until the third year of Southern Decadence. And 2008 gives us the 36th Grand Marshals, because the two Grand Marshals in 1978 were counted as numbers V and VI. And thanks to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Grand Marshals XXXIII reigned for both 2005 and 2006. Also, 2008 will feature the 35th parade, because there was no official parade in 1972 and 2005.

Coping With Katrina to Showcase Children's Art Therapy Initiative

From August 27 to November 2, the New Orleans Museum of Art will present Coping with Katrina: Artwork from the Hyogo-NOMA Children's Art Therapy Initiative, an exhibition of artworks by children who lived through the 2005 hurricane and subsequent flooding. All of the pieces were produced by participants in the Hyogo-NOMA Children's Art Therapy Initiative, which has offered art therapy sessions at schools throughout the New Orleans area and at free day camps at the Museum.

"The works express sincere emotions about the children's experiences with Hurricane Katrina," said Holly Wherry, the professional art therapist who has been on staff at NOMA since 2007 and who coordinated the sessions that led to this exhibition.

"You see how they are coping three years after the storm, and you see their immense pride in New Orleans." All of the participating children have given permission for their art to be exhibited publicly in order to communicate their experiences and educate the public about
art therapy.

A public reception in honor of the participants will be held at the Museum on Wednesday,
September 3, from 6-8 p.m.

The Tree of Rebirth Project
In conjunction with Coping with Katrina, a special art-making event will take place in the Museum's Great Hall on Saturday, August 30, from 1-4 p.m. Three years after the flood, New Orleanians of all ages are invited to contribute to this public art project by creating an artistic rendering of their wish for the city, then hanging it on the "Tree of Rebirth," a six-foot papier mâché tree. No artistic ability is required.

Admission to Coping With Katrina and the Tree of Rebirth Project, as well as all other current exhibitions and public programs, is free to Louisiana residents courtesy of The Helis Foundation.

About the Hyogo-NOMA Art Therapy Initiative
Through a generous gift from the Hyogo Prefecture of Japan, NOMA has been providing
art therapy services to the children of New Orleans. Art therapy is a mental health profession that helps people use art to process their emotions when they have difficulty expressing themselves verbally, and over 250 New Orleans public school children have received weekly art therapy services as part of the Hyogo-NOMA Children's Art Therapy Initiative. In total, almost 800 children, educators, mental health professionals, and parents have benefited from the program over the past year by learning to use art to process, share, cope with, and express their Hurricane Katrina experiences. The program provided art therapy groups for children who may not otherwise have had access to mental health services and were often traumatized, uncertain, frightened and living in communities in transition.

About NOMA and the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden
The New Orleans Museum of Art, founded in 1910 by Isaac Delgado, houses more than
30,000 art objects encompassing 4,000 years of world art. Works from the permanent collection, along with continuously changing temporary exhibitions, are on view in the Museum's 46 galleries Wednesdays from noon to 8 p.m. and Thursdays to Sundays from
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission to the Museum is free to Louisiana residents through the generosity of The Helis Foundation.

Admission to the adjacent Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden, featuring work by 57 artists, including several of the 20th century's master sculptors, is always free during regular Museum hours.

The New Orleans Museum of Art and the Sculpture Garden are fully accessible to handicapped visitors and wheelchairs are available from the front desk.

L.C. Ulmer in collaboration with Ponderosa Stomp Foundation (R&B)

Lee Chester “L.C.” Ulmer is a native of south Mississippi who for 50 years played music all over the U.S.—“like horse manure, everywhere!”—before returning home to the Ellisville area in 2001. He is a multi-instrumentalist who plays guitar, keyboards, drums, fiddle, banjo mandolin, kazoo, and harmonica, and performed for many years as a “twelve piece” one-man band. Today he plays mostly just guitar at live performances, and performs mostly original compositions in a distinctive style with a propulsive boogie beat

RISING WATER opens THE Bayou Playhouse’s PREMIERE SEASON

(Lockport, LA) Perry Martin recently returned to Bayou Lafourche after directing the critically acclaimed Off Broadway production of Mirrors of Chartres Street. His newly formed HALIFAX Theatre Company is preparing for the August 29th grand opening of the BAYOU PLAYHOUSE’S premiere season with New Orleans playwright John Biguenet’s Pulitzer Prize nominated, Rising Water, starring Randy Cheramie and Lorna Gianelloni.

Rising Water is the top bestselling show in the 20-year history of Southern Rep Theatre (despite the fact that the previous record was set when New Orleans had twice the population as the city did at the time of the play’s run). Rising Water was the winner of the 2006 National New Play Network Commission Award, a 2006 National Showcase of New Plays selection, and a 2007 recipient of an Access to Artistic Excellence development and production grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. It has been nominated for the 2008 Pulitzer Prize in drama.

Playwright, John Biguenet wrote, “Rising Water is about a couple who awakens in the middle of the night to find their pitch-dark house filling with water in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.” Biguenet continued, “clambering into their attic, and then onto their rooftop, they struggle not only to survive but also to keep the guttering flame of their love from being extinguished.”

“The New Orleans theatre scene took a hard hit in 2005. A significant number of the city’s theaters were damaged or destroyed. Even now, many areas of our State are still in recovery from the devastation caused by Hurricanes Rita and Katrina.“ Martin continued, “Karissa Kary, the Halifax Producing Managing Director, BAYOU Technical Director David Guidry and myself are convinced that South Louisiana is ready to support a Southern based professional theater with a primary focus on tales about Louisiana, told by Louisianans.”

Guidry had obtained the sound and lighting equipment from the True Brew Playhouse and 100 of the original theatre seats from the Saenger Theater, which he generously provided to the BAYOU. “We’re opening the Bayou with a play about Katrina, on the storm’s anniversary, in a theater built from pieces and parts of two theaters destroyed by the infamous hurricane. “ Guidry said proudly. Both venues remain closed since the storm’s landfall.

Along with Rising Water, the BAYOU’S premiere season lineup will include Anne Galjour’s Cajun comedy, OKRA and John Doucet’s Cheniere Caminada hurricane play, Tant Que Durera La Terre. Martin’s premiere production of OKRA sold out 4 months of New Orleans performances before Katrina destroyed the True Brew Playhouse. Tant Que Durera La Terre was seen by over 6,000 patrons when it premièred at South Lafourche High School in 1993. Both Galjour and Doucet are Lafourche Parish natives.

Though the BAYOU PLAYHOUSE, the HALIFAX Theatre Company will continue Martin’s life long mission to promote & showcase Louisiana's most precious natural resources; its amazing people, its beautiful art, heritage and culture and its colorful history. “Now, more than ever, we as a people, as a community, as a culture need to remember who we are, where we came from and what wonderful history we’ve yet to make.” Martin concluded.

Rising Water will open on August 29th and run through Sept. 28th . Performances are on Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 pm with Sunday matinees at 2:30 pm. For ticket purchase, season subscriptions, corporate sponsorship or other information about the BAYOU PLAYHOUSE, visit www.bayouplayhouse.com or call
