The New Orleans 100
"We have a real opportunity to make a difference here.
You could read about this in history books someday or you could take a role to help create it.
I can't imagine being anywhere else right now."
- Lauren Baum, The Idea Village
"The New Orleans 100" is a worldwide initiative that will highlight and encourage discussion among millions about 100 of the most innovative and world-changing ideas to take root in the city since Katrina.
After hearing so many of the positive changes and innovative projects post-Katrina, we've decided enough is enough. It's time to put an end to the negative press in mainstream media. We know that the levees broke. We know that our city is dysfunctional. We know that. But do you know about Prospect.1? Or about the influx of young professionals into New Orleans? The world needs to know about the NEW New Orleans. And to quote Brad Pitt, "If you're going to rebuild something, why not rebuild it right?" Amen brother.
To combat top down media during the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, we will leverage bottom up tools on the social web (email, blogs, twitter, facebook, digg, etc.), which can reach a combined audience of millions to raise awareness about New Orleans and inspire action to make a difference.
The list will be released on Monday, August 25th - the week of the Hurricane Katrina anniversary. Our goal is to reach 1,000,000 pageviews by 8/29/08. We encourage everyone to spread the word by emailing the list, blogging it, digging it, stumbling it, and yelling it out their windows.
You can make a difference. All it takes is a click!

Noted French organist to present recital and workshop on the organ music of François Couperin
Msgr. Crosby W. Kern, Rector of the St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans announces a rare and historically important performance of François Couperin's Mass of the Parishes. Couperin (1698-1733) served the French court as organist, harpsichordist, and composer and is noted for the fusion of French and italian styles. In 1690, he published his only but exceptionally important Pièces d'orgue, which consists of two masses for organ that alternate with Gregorian Chant.
On Sunday, August 24, at 6 pm, Michel Bouvard, one of the world's leading organists and authority on French baroque organ music, will give a rare performance of the François Couperin's Mass of the Parishes. The chant will be sung by the St. Louis Cathedral Choir.
In preparation for the concert, the cathedral choir will have the privilege of a period of intensive training under Ismael Fernández de la Cuesta, the world's leading authority on chant. The concert will provide a rare chance to hear the music, well known to the founding fathers of New Orleans, as originally intended. The concert will be free and open to the public.
In addition, Mr. Bouvard (Titular Organist of the Cathedral of Saint-Sernine in Toulouse, France and professor or organ of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris with Olivier Latry) will present a workshop on the organ music of François Couperin on Saturday, August 23. The workshop will be limited to 20 participants. It will begin at 9:30 am and will last for 2 hours.

BIA Introduces “Quick Strike” Fund
Home repair program will support Broadmoorians who fall through the cracks
The Broadmoor Improvement Association (BIA) today announced its “Quick Strike” Program to support Broadmoorians with relatively low-cost home repair needs who fall through the cracks of large government programs. Introduced this summer, Quick Strike will supplement ongoing efforts to reduce blight and poverty throughout Broadmoor.
Today, many New Orleanians are unable to stretch Katrina-related insurance or government funding to restore completely their homes. As a result, they rebuild their homes but do without modern kitchen appliances; try to stay cool in the summer with only ceilings fans; or sleep on a couch because they cannot afford a new mattress.
The BIA is using Quick Strike to alleviate these daily indignities. Thus far, the BIA has allocated $35,281.15 to purchase 13 refrigerators, 12 stoves, 14 washing machines, 5 dryers, 32 beds, 6 air conditioners, and 186 boxes of groceries. Recipients of the support were elderly, disabled, low income, single parents, or unemployed.
“Many residents of Broadmoor have important but relatively inexpensive home problems that the government has not solved yet, so we are jumping in to help out” said Hal Roark, Executive Director of the Broadmoor Development Corporation, the redevelopment branch of the BIA.
“This program will focus not on full home renovations but on the things people should not have to live without: washing machines, dishwashers, comfortable furniture” he continued. “If the problem exists in Broadmoor, then thousands of people around the city require similar assistance, because as goes Broadmoor, so goes the rest of the city.”
The program is made possible by grants from the Taylor Foundation, Douglas Ahlers, Walter Isaacson, and the New Orleans Food and Wine Experience.
The Broadmoor Improvement Association (BIA) is the leading civic organization for this diverse, thriving community in the heart of New Orleans. Created in 1930 to address the needs of the recently established neighborhood, the BIA incorporated in 1970 to fight the racially divisive practice of "blockbusting."
Since Katrina, the BIA has led community efforts to rebuild Broadmoor – better than before. To date, the community has repaired over seventy percent of its homes; the neighborhood’s charter school just finished its first full year of operation; work is poised to begin on a local library. Challenges persist, but the BIA is committed to revitalizing Broadmoor – and by extension, the City of New Orleans – home-by-home and block-by-block, one resident at a time.

And The Winner Is… Chef John Currence
The Crowned King of American Seafood
Fifth Annual Great American Seafood Cook-Off
New Orleans 2008
Congratulations to Chef John Currence, representing Mississippi! He beat out 14 other prestigious chefs from across the nation to be crowned King of American Seafood at the 2008 Fifth Annual Great American Seafood Cook-Off! It was a spectacular battle between great culinary talents at the Louisiana Foodservice EXPO, but at the end of the two day contest, only Chef Currence became Seafood royalty. And that’s no title to take lightly.
After all, you can’t crown just anybody King of American Seafood! Chef John Currence hails from Mississippi, where he is chef/owner at the acclaimed City Grocery in city of Oxford. His ‘fin’-tastic winning dish completely epitomized the essence of Mississippi cuisine and proved he is no ‘fish-out-of-water.’ The judges were ‘hooked’ by his Mississippi Redfish Courtboullion with Seafood Dirty Rice as he didn’t ‘scale’ back on authentic, unique flavors. “Being home, cooking at home, and winning this award in New Orleans meant so much to my family here. Really though, what stands out about this competition was the great camaraderie that developed among the chefs. There were a lot of talented chefs in the room, and I was proud to be among them,” Currence says with a gleam.
But, there was plenty of stiff competition. The first day of the contest found chefs representing Alaska, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, New Jersey, North Carolina, Texas, and Washington, D.C., all vying for just five places in the second day of the event. They all presented tantalizing, sophisticated dishes using sustainable domestic seafood from their states on the first day. But, ultimately, just Paul Anders of Colorado, Brian Landry of Louisiana, Tafari Campbell of Maryland, John Currence of Mississippi, and Mark Holley of Texas, went on to the second day. The contestants then had to demonstrate a delicious and nutritious home-style dish practical for any home-cook to prepare. Although everything was wonderful, the judges believed that Chef Currence’s Mississippi Redfish Courtboullion stood above the rest. The 2007 King Tim Thomas of Georgia was on h
and to crown Chef Currence as the reigning champion and King of American Seafood. Second and third place winners were Brian Landry of Louisiana and Tafari Campbell of Maryland.
Prestigious connoisseurs from across the nation brought their appetites and their highly-discerning palates to serve as judges: Serious Eats’ New York editor Zach Brooks, Santé magazine’s Ed Mueller, Dr. Roy Crabtree of Washington, D.C.’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Chef and 2006 Cook-Off winner Justin Timineri of the Florida Department of Agriculture, Chef and owner Jody Denton of Merenda Restaurant and Wine Bar in Oregon, and Chris Koetke, Dean of Chicago’s School of Culinary Arts of Kendall College. On the second day of competition, one of the nine competing non-finalist chefs was chosen, Peter Fischbach of New Jersey, to cast his vote for the final award to be given to the new King of American Seafood. Chef Koetke stated, “Currence pulled together the flavors of Mississippi. He presented regional ingredients and regional ideas. And his family dish was so approachable. He got it!”

New Orleans Photographer Skip Bolen Launches New Website of Jazz Photos, Rural Water Towers and Cityscapes
The new Skip Bolen Photography website has been officially launched this week. The website features an eclectic mix of both black + white and color photographs primarily of musicians in New Orleans; downtown street scenes of New Orleans, Los Angeles and New York City; rural water towers from Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas; and lastly, stills photography from Fox Television's K-Ville.
The new website can be viewed at www.SkipBolen.com
The new website contains an impressive portfolio of music portraits:
James Brown (commonly referred to as "The Godfather of Soul" and "The Hardest Working Man in Show Business"), the luminous jazz vocalist Jimmy Scott, plus many other musicians including Wayne Shorter, Henry Grimes, Roy Hargrove, Dave Brubeck, Herbie Hancock, Nicholas Payton, David Murray, Marcus Roberts, Terence Blanchard, Irvin Mayfield, Ellis
Marsalis, John Legend, Elvis Costello and many more seasoned performers to several new rising sensations such as Jonathan Batiste, Christian Scott and Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews bringing down the house at the annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.
Other works on the new website include an architectural project that captures the romance and nostalgia of vintage signs, landmarks and other points of interest shot in and around New York, Los Angeles, and Bolen's hometown of New Orleans. Images include a black + white
photograph of the first Buds Broiler opened in 1952 on City Park Avenue in New Orleans still standing and untouched by Hurricane Katrina that appears the same today as it did 56 years ago -- this photograph was included in Skip Bolen's latest work exhibited in the group photography show at the Stella Jones Gallery in New Orleans last December 2007. Other images on the website include downtown Los Angeles street scenes at night of old theatre marquees, eateries, and a view of Los Angeles' downtown skyline from a top the hills behind the Hollywood Sign; a thrilling view at night of the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges with the Manhattan skyline in the distance from the perspective of a sixth-floor artist loft in DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) in Brooklyn; and the downtown New Orleans Walgreens Drug Store, Lenny's Piccadilly Lounge, The Half Shell, Meyer The Hatter and Mrs. Mae's all photographed in the wee hours of the night. Bolen says, “I much pr
efer roaming the streets and photographing late at night with only available light as I often think that the night is so much more alive and much more richly colored than the day. Jazz comes alive at night in the clubs, streetlights and neon lights wash everything in a glow and there is often a sense of mystery lurking in the shadows and silhouettes."
Rural water towers have always fascinated Skip Bolen, and the new website includes Photographs of several rural water towers taken on travels across southern Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. The freshly painted Lake Village water tower illuminated with spotlights on the banks of Lake Chicot in Louisiana and photographed at night almost
looks surreal while his other photographs of older water towers are completely rusted, pitted, graffitied or grown over with vines.
When Skip Bolen isn't roaming the streets or spending late nights in jazz clubs searching for images to photograph, he is often found on movie sets working as a stills photographer and the new website features several of his stills photographs from Season 1 of Fox Television's K-Ville based in New Orleans in the wake of post Katrina that featured Anthony Anderson and Cole Hauser as the lead roles. Born outside New Orleans, Skip Bolen has made his home in New Orleans after living in New York City and Los Angeles. His photographs are in several public and private collections, among them the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans and most recently, The Louisiana State Museum acquired 22 of his photographs. His work has also been exhibited in many solo and group exhibitions, among them The Stella Jones Gallery, Robert Bruno Gallery and John Stinson Gallery in New Orleans; The Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles, Jazz Day L.A. at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, and the Los Ange
les Jazz Society's Annual Jazz Tribute & Concert. His photographs have appeared in numerous publications including The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Vogue, New York Post, US Weekly, Elle, VH-1, New York Magazine, Jazz Times Magazine, Downbeat Magazine, Where New Orleans and recently the July 24th 2008 cover of Pasatiempo, the Arts and Culture Magazine of the
Santa Fe New Mexican.
