Tuesday nights
Beginner Lindy Hop
8:00 - 9:00 PM
According to legend, the Lindy Hop gained its famous name in 1927, when a New York reporter witnessed "Shorty" George Snowden dancing during a marathon dance contest. When asked what he was doing, Shorty George responded in his delirium "I'm doing Lindy's Hop," after Charles Lindbergh's famous trans-Atlantic flight just a few weeks prior. The best way to describe Lindy Hop? It is the swing dancing you see in the 1920 -1940's. It has also been featured in recent movies Malcolm X & Swing Kids.
Solo Charleston (for men and women)
9:00 - 10:00 PM
While it developed in African-American communities in the USA, the Charleston became a popular dance craze in the wider international community in the 1920s. Despite its black history, Charleston is most frequently associated with white flappers and the speakeasy. Here, these young women would dance alone or together as a way of mocking the "drys," or citizens who supported the Prohibition amendment, as Charleston was then considered quite immoral and provocative. Charleston is currently one of the most popular dances for women AND men among the swing dance community.
Wednesday nights
Beginner Swing (Jitterbug)
8:30 - 9:30 PM
It is the youngest of the dances that I teach. It evolved out of Lindy Hop and became very popular in the 1950's. Popular across the world, it is one of the easiest of the swing dances to learn and will get you out swingin' on the dancefloor in no time!
These classes are for men and women (even though this is an all women's studio), however do not feel like you have to have a partner as everyone will be rotating (except in the solo Charleston class).
Saffron Studio is located at:
3121 Metairie Rd
Metairie, LA 70001
(on Old Metairie Road near Causeway)
This is a 6 week series, however you can drop in on any class without committing to the whole six weeks. For information on pricing, please go to www.saffronstudio.org.

Spaniards, and British, and Slaves, Oh My!:
Organizing the Defense of the Orleans Territory
Louisiana State Museum- Arsenal
600 St. Peters Street
Thursday, August 21, 2008
6 p.m.-8 p.m
History Ya- Ya Series presents Professor Joseph Frederick Stoltz, III speaking on "*Spaniards, and British, and Slaves, Oh My!: Organizing the Defense of the Orleans Territory*". One of the first decisions the United States had to make following the Louisiana Purchase was how to organize the defense of its new territory. Military policy in America from the time of colonization was the let the locals defend themselves in an organized militia. But with the prospect of a militia formed of francophone Catholics, most of whom were Free People of Color, the government arranged for other policies. Dr. Stoltz explores this period in time and how the Orleans Territory suffered and succeeded.

Lionel Ferbos and the Louisiana Shakers + Ogden 5th Anniversary Special Celebration (jazz)
The Ogden invites you to our 5th Anniversary After Hours Celebration with Lionel Ferbos and the Louisiana Shakers.
Ever since he earned his first professional job in the late 1920s with the Starlight Serenaders native New Orleanian Lionel Ferbos has been consistently active in the New Orleans music community. In his early years, he played with acts such as Captain John Handy's Louisiana Shakers and pianist Walter Chapon's band. During the Depression, Ferbos played in the WPA band, which was comprised of stellar musicians such as Willie Humphrey. Subsequent stints with Herb Leary's Society Syncopaters and the Mighty Four followed, but his 1970 induction into Lars Edegran's New Orleans Ragtime Orchestra has proved to be Ferbos' most enduring association. In recognition of his distinguished career that spans almost a century, Ferbos was honored with the Music Heritage Award at the 16th Annual Big Easy Entertainment Awards. Ferbos will be celebrating his 97th birthday this year, making him the oldest living jazz musician in New Orleans.

ESOTEROTICA: Who can sleep with this heat?
We don't know about you, but the new Voodoo Mystére Lounge is exhausted. At this point we'd like nothing better (yes, buildings speak in the first-person plural) than to curl up with a good story.
Of course, being a bar/performance space, our idea of a good story has...matured a bit.
Presenting our newest series: "Esoterotica: Bedtime Stories for Adults," a Friday night special.
It's theater at its simplest: A skillful actor with a nice voice comes in, settles into a comfy chair next to a good reading light, and regales all assembled with a story of fantastic adventure... in this case, of fantastic intimate adventure. Those fortunates so pleasured sip wine, snuggle up and, occasionally, make unexpected noises.
All the stories chosen are first-person, offered up as true-life. But we know the current state of veracity in memoir: Some are true; some, well, maybe a little shaded in truth.
All of them are great yarns, though, especially when recounted by these great performers:
August 22: Lauded and awarded DANE RHODES reads John Preston's seminal collection of intertwined gay-male SM stories, "I Once Had a Master."
This should be a lot of fun. We may even rustle up some mood music. On vinyl.

Publication Day Party!! for Fresh Kills by Bill Loehfelm
Join us in celebrating the release of Fresh Kills with a reading & booksigning
Sat. August 23 1:00-3:00 PM
In Fresh Kills, the murder of John Sanders, Sr. on a New York street corner reunites his estranged and abused children, John, Jr. and Julia. While Julia struggles to keep things together on the home front, Junior, unhinged by his father's death, searches for the killer across the bleak, haunted landscape of his Staten Island hometown. Complicating Junior's pursuit are two police detectives: one, a former childhood friend; the other, a veteran cop who might have his own reasons to wish John, Sr. dead. Junior's affair with his high school sweetheart doesn't exactly simplify the situation either, and his emotional state crumbles under the pressure coming at him from every side. When the opportunity for revenge presents itself, Junior must decide whether he will continue the chain of violence that has nearly destroyed his life, or give in to the possibility of a new beginning.
Born in Brooklyn and raised on Staten Island, Bill Loehfelm moved to New Orleans in 1997 where he's taught high school and college, managed a pizza joint and an antique shop, and tended bar in the Quarter and the Warehouse District. Winner of the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award, his work has also appeared in the anthologies Year Zero and Life in the Wake.
Fresh Kills is published in hardback by Putnam - $24.95

Cathedral-Basilica of St. Louis King of France
615 Pere Antoine Alley, New Orleans, LA 70116
504-525-9585
On Sunday, August 24, 2008 at 6:00 p.m., in the first of six concerts in the 2008-2009 Cathedral Concert Series, the St. Louis Cathedral proudly presents M. Michel Bouvard, the Titular Organist of the Cathedral of Saint-Sernin in Toulouse, France, performing the music of Francois Couperin, Messe a L'usage ordinarie des Paroisses with the St. Louis Cathedral Choir.
ST. LOUIS CATHEDRAL TO PRESENT A RARE PERFORMANCE OF
EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY FRENCH ORGAN MUSIC AND HOST ORGAN WORKSHOP
Noted French organist to present recital and workshop on the organ music of François Couperin
Msgr. Crosby W. Kern, Rector of the St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans announces a rare and historically important performance of François Couperin's Mass of the Parishes. Couperin (1698-1733) served the French court as organist, harpsichordist, and composer and is noted for the fusion of French and Italian styles. In 1690, he published his only but exceptionally important Pièces d'orgue, which consists of two masses for organ that alternate with Gregorian Chant.
On Sunday, August 24, at 6 pm, Michel Bouvard, one of the world's leading organists and authority on French baroque organ music, will give a rare performance of the François Couperin's Mass of the Parishes. The chant will be sung by the St. Louis Cathedral Choir.
In preparation for the concert, the cathedral choir will have the privilege of a period of intensive training under Ismael Fernández de la Cuesta, the world's leading authority on chant. The concert will provide a rare chance to hear the music, well known to the founding fathers of New Orleans, as originally intended. The concert will be free and open to the public.
In addition, Mr. Bouvard (Titular Organist of the Cathedral of Saint-Sernine in Toulouse, France and professor or organ of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris with Olivier Latry) will present a workshop on the organ music of François Couperin
on Saturday, August 23. The workshop will be limited to 20 participants.
It will begin at 9:30 am and will last for 2 hours. The registration fee will be $20, and $10 for students. The workshop will be held on the recently reinstalled Cathedral organ that was
severely damaged during Hurricane Katrina. Reservations can be made by calling
504-525-9585, ext. 35; by fax 504-525-9583; or email: naverett908@yahoo.com.
