The Mystick at the Royal Sonesta Hotel
Announces Return of 1950's-Style Entertainment
To Bourbon Street
Turn back the clock to a moment in time when ladies donned fine hats, slipped on stockings with their high heels, and grabbed a pair of white gloves for a night out on the town with their man. After dinner, entertainment crowned the evening and more often than not couples found themselves on Bourbon Street. Bustling with action, one of the premier entertainment corridors in the country packed patrons into places like the Sho-Bar or the 500 Club. Stars like Lilly Christine the Cat Girl, Evangeline the Oyster Girl and Blaze Starr held court while live jazz bands serenaded their every move.
That was Bourbon Street during the 1950's in its heyday. On Friday August 15th, an historic announcement will take place at the Royal Sonesta Hotel. You are invited to bear witness and record it as it unfolds:
DATE: Friday August 15, 2008
TIME: Begins at 10:00 a.m.
LOCALE: Royal Sonesta Hotel, 300 Bourbon Street
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:
* At precisely 10:00 a.m., an entourage of players gathers for a brief parade through the French Quarter at the former site of the 500 Club, corner of Bourbon and St. Louis streets.
* At approximately 10:15 a.m., the entourage arrives at the Royal Sonesta Hotel's main entrance at 300 Bourbon Street.
* Upon arrival, Alfred L. Groos, Vice President and General Manager of the Royal Sonesta Hotel will personally greet each car, containing a special guest.
* At approximately 10:25 a.m., the entourage will be escorted inside the hotel to the newly renovated Mystick where an historic announcement will take place. Invited Media will be welcomed inside and seated prior to the presentation.
* At approximately 10:30 a.m., the presentation will begin.
* Q & A will immediately follow.
* All media are invited to remain for a brief reception.
* Event will conclude at 11:30 a.m.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES:
* The entourage assembles briefly at the former site of the 500 Club, and parade begins.
The arrival of the entourage in the front of the Royal Sonesta Hotel. The entourage will be dressed in 1950's daywear and will arrive in vintage vehicles of the same period.
* A live jazz band will be performing at hotel's entrance as the entourage arrives.
* The Royal Sonesta's General Manager welcoming the entourage.
* The Announcement inside the Mystick.

STRESS EXPERT DR. ARTHUR SAMUELS TO SPEAK ON STRESS BUSTING IN THE PARISH
The Community Center's Summer 2008 Dinner Dance series will continue on August 16, 2008 with a hot meal served from 4:30 to 6:30 PM at the Community Center of St Bernard, 1107 LeBeau St in Arabi.
The meal will be followed by a one-hour presentation from special guest speaker Dr. Arthur Samuels. A distinguished New Orleans psychiatrist-author with over forty years of clinical experience, Dr. Samuels is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Tulane and LSU Schools of
Medicine, Director of The Stress Treatment Center of New Orleans, and was elected a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He is also the author of the highly acclaimed, internationally published, "The Art of Saying Goodbye--How To Survive The Loss Of A Love".
Dr Samuels' presentation, "Stress Busters - A Tool Kit for Coping", will provide the audience with his techniques for dealing with the overwhelming rigors of post-Katrina stress. Staff from Louisiana Spirit will also be on hand to offer emotional support and assistance.
The evening will end with a dance featuring a live performance by the Irene Sage Band from 7:30 to 10:00 PM. A popular New Orleans group whose distinctive style has clear roots in bands like The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Heart and Led Zeppelin with a little funk added in, the Irene Sage Band's recent releases include "Soul to Soul" and "Come on In".
This session of the Community Dinner Dance series is sponsored by the New Orleans Musicians Clinic. Food is provided through funding from the Louisiana Family Recovery Corp. The dinner dance is free to the general public, and everyone is welcome to attend. For further information, please contact the Community Center of St Bernard at 504-281-2512 or visit http://ent.groundspring.org/EmailNow/pub.php?module=URLTracker&cmd=track&j=226193016&u=2369988

Please note: The Voodoo Mystere Lounge is doing diverse programming, including theater, poetry, comedy, performance art, and acoustic music. If this particular notice doesn't fall within your field of interest, let me know. I'll break my press list down into subcategories.
Also please note: The last Voodoo email, about "Punch 'n' Trudy" on Sunday afternoons, should've given dates of July 27-September 7, noon-4pm. I don't seem to have confused too many recipients, but it was dumb nonentheless.

Tuesday nights
Beginner Lindy Hop
8:00 - 9:00 PM
According to legend, the Lindy Hop gained its famous name in 1927, when a New York reporter witnessed "Shorty" George Snowden dancing during a marathon dance contest. When asked what he was doing, Shorty George responded in his delirium "I'm doing Lindy's Hop," after Charles Lindbergh's famous trans-Atlantic flight just a few weeks prior. The best way to describe Lindy Hop? It is the swing dancing you see in the 1920 -1940's. It has also been featured in recent movies Malcolm X & Swing Kids.
Solo Charleston (for men and women)
9:00 - 10:00 PM
While it developed in African-American communities in the USA, the Charleston became a popular dance craze in the wider international community in the 1920s. Despite its black history, Charleston is most frequently associated with white flappers and the speakeasy. Here, these young women would dance alone or together as a way of mocking the "drys," or citizens who supported the Prohibition amendment, as Charleston was then considered quite immoral and provocative. Charleston is currently one of the most popular dances for women AND men among the swing dance community.
Wednesday nights
Beginner Swing (Jitterbug)
8:30 - 9:30 PM
It is the youngest of the dances that I teach. It evolved out of Lindy Hop and became very popular in the 1950's. Popular across the world, it is one of the easiest of the swing dances to learn and will get you out swingin' on the dancefloor in no time!
These classes are for men and women (even though this is an all women's studio), however do not feel like you have to have a partner as everyone will be rotating (except in the solo Charleston class).
Saffron Studio is located at:
3121 Metairie Rd
Metairie, LA 70001
(on Old Metairie Road near Causeway)
This is a 6 week series, however you can drop in on any class without committing to the whole six weeks. For information on pricing, please go to www.saffronstudio.org.
